May 2021 Update

Hi there! We just wanted to send out a brief update on Astromotive's propulsion system development campaign. After our first successful ignition tests back in late fall 2020, several major upgrades were made to the engine and test stand over the winter months, and testing resumed this spring. Below are a few of the highlights.

We have a new permanent test facility! It's behind our existing shop, so no more packing up the entire test stand and driving it over to an open field for each test. Shown here is the first water flow test after getting the pad set up.
The engine features new main propellant valves. This was a major upgrade to both the test stand and the engine controller software. These 1/2" cryogenic ball valves allow for much higher propellant flow rates, and enable throttling capabilities by partially opening and closing the valve with the motorized actuator.
Finally, hot-fire tests! Two tests in two weeks have been performed on the new pad. Our test stand measures thrust and propellant flow rates, and we were able to capture test data which will be used to evaluate engine performance and make further design improvements.
This prototype has been fired seven times so far, and it's held up surprisingly well. It will likely be retired after a few more test-fires. The next iteration will feature numerous changes that will promote longer duration burns at higher pressures. Stay tuned!
